Where is the office located?

The Codes Compliance Department and Permit Office are located on the 3rd floor of Hampton City Hall. City Hall is located at 22 Lincoln St. at the intersection of Lincoln St. and Eaton St.

The Permit Office is open from 7:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m. Monday-Friday. Inspectors are in the office from 7:00 a.m.-8:00 a.m. and again from 3:00 p.m.-3:30 p.m. Monday-Friday.

Department Head - responsible for the operation of the Codes Compliance Department to include the inspection function, plan review function, permit office, erosion and sediment control and Chesapeake Bay Act enforcement, land use enforcement (i.e. Use Permit and Rezoning conditions), Zoning Ordinance and related care of premise enforcement (Weed/debris, inoperative vehicles) and associated administration.

When are permits required?
Permits are required for the following:

  • Adding or installing new circuits (circuit breakers)
  • Changing / upgrading electrical service
  • Installing, replacing or extending electrical wiring (new wiring requires a permit)
  • New electrical service
  • Relocating or replacing a meter base
  • Relocating or replacing a panel box, including changing from fuse to breaker panel
  • Subfed panels
  • Temporary poles
  • Replacing service entrance cable
  • Trailer services

Calling for an Inspection:

Inspections are scheduled through the City of Hampton's Customer Call Center. If in Hampton, simply dial 311; if on a cell phone or outside of Hampton, dial 727-8311. Inspections can be requested 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Customer advocates cannot schedule an exact time for the inspection; inspectors are available each day from 7:00 a.m. - 8:00 a.m. and again from 3:00 p.m. - 3:30 p.m. to answer questions and handle specific requests.
